The Hutchins School is an Anglican day and boarding school for boys from Pre-Kindergarten to Year 12. The School was established in 1846 in memory of The Venerable William Hutchins, first Archdeacon of Van Diemen’s Land, and is one of the oldest continually running schools in Australia. We have a strong sense of tradition that instils in our students and staff an appreciation for the history of the School and what it means to be a part of the Hutchins community. Our Vision is to provide an inspirational education where each boy strives to achieve his personal best and is willing to serve his community as an informed and active citizen; locally, nationally and globally. Our Mission is to provide a supportive and learning community that works together to build character of boys. We undertake a partnership with families to Build Good Men who aspire to be our future leaders and who will continue on to serve their global community. Situated in Sandy Bay, only 5 kilometres from the Hobart city centre, The Hutchins School offers outstanding facilities including modern classrooms, science and computer laboratories, three libraries, a performing arts centre, multiple sporting grounds, a chapel and the student residence. Hutchins is a founding-member of the International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC) and is also a member of the Independent Schools of Tasmania. The Headmaster is a member of the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia. In 2014, The Hutchins School was made an accredited member of the Council of International Schools (CIS). Member schools have a commitment to high quality education, are vision driven, mission led and have a focus on international mindedness and provide students with knowledge, skills and abilities to pursue their lives as global citizens. Hutchins has a proud history of outstanding academic success. Our students consistently rank in the highest academic achievers within the state and nationally, this includes 22 Rhodes Scholars. We have an expansive co-curricular program on offer including Music, Performing Arts, Debating, Sports and Duke of Edinburgh. The School offers a unique Power of 9 program which aims to encourage students in developing the skills, passion, the positive attitudes, values and knowledge necessary for planning a pathway to being successful through Years 10, 11, 12 and beyond. The John Bednall Centre for Excellence is a unique entity at The Hutchins School and aims to promote increased access to and participation in all aspects of schooling for students with additional needs, both in terms of support classes, assisting with the development of Individual Education Programs for students with learning difficulties and extension programs for gifted and talented students. The Hutchins School is at the forefront of Information, Communications and Technologies (ICT) in the educational arena. The Hutchins School ICT Policy aims to ensure that students will leave school as confident, creative and productive users of new technologies, including ICT and understanding the impact of those technologies on society. The Chaplains play a pivotal role in the life of The Hutchins School and are very involved in the life of the School through; classroom teaching, coaching sporting teams, leading services and creating community service opportunities locally and globally. The Chapel of St Thomas is located at the School representing the foundational role of the Christian faith in the history and current operations of the School. Hutchins students also benefit from a unique co-operating schools model where students from Years 11 and 12 are able to attend subjects at our sister school St Michael’s Collegiate and our co-operating school Fahan School. This provides students with the best of both worlds from a socialisation and subject availability perspective.
